Community reinvestment act

The CRA of 1977 requires federally regulated financial institutions to provide low income neighborhoods with credit outside of the scope of traditional lending standards in order to achieve government lending goals. FDIC insured commercial banks and savings associations that fail to meet regulatory guidelines are subject to regulatory discipline, particularly when applying for new branches, mergers or acquisitions.
