Systemically Important Financial Institution

A SIFI a bank, investment firm, or insurance company that federal regulators deem pose a severe risk to the economy if it were to collapse and thus are subject to heightened regulation and regulatory scrutiny. The term too-big-to-fail refers to SIFIs.
