Public Debt

Is the total amount of US government debt outstanding EXCLUDING intragovernmental debt (Social Security Trust Fund, Medicare Trust Fund, FDIC Deposit Insurance, the Highway Trust Fund, etc.). Public debt includes debt held by individuals, businesses, banks, insurance companies, state and local governments, pension funds, mutual funds, foreign governments, foreign businesses and individuals, and the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank.
